New Years 2025

I'm gonna work backwards here a little to record some things that have happened recently:

Mahana Fresh - this new fast cas place opened up a month or so ago and I wanted to check them out. The app was kind of lacking. They had a deal for wraps, $6.99 each if you get 2. I got 2 veggies but there was no customization. I am eating them now, live, as I type. Pretty mediocre. Just some veggies and sweet potato in a wrap...which I guess is what I should expect. It needed something else and I added sriracha and that helped. I also got Josie a bowl which she has not opened yet. When I went in to pick it up, the menu had more stuff than the app showed, including mac and cheese bowls and smoothies. I would probably give it a C grade, but will try it again and order in-store next time.

Magic The Gathering - Steve and his friends had started playing this recently and I was like 46 years old is probably the right age to start a new complicated nerdy game hobby. I bought a Fallout-themed deck and played at Steve's last night. It's a lot. But also I see the appeal and after realizing I had purchased a deck that was more appropriate for a level 60 wizard, and not at all reasonable for a complete noob, I went ahead and ordered a cheap beginners deck to use for next time. I hopefully will be able to keep up with Mike's indestructible characters, Bubba's death touch, and Steve's White Guy Army.

Ruck Sack - My dad got me the Wild Gym Ruck Sack with a 30lb weight plate. 30 pounds is heavier than I expected but also the bag is very well built and designed. I had significantly less tension in my traps and shoulders than when I tried rucking with a regular backpack in the past. It has a metal frame, chest and hip straps, and excellent padding. Josie said I look like Dora the Explorer. In a continuing theme, I hope to make rucking a regular in my exercise rotation.

Books - I used to have a really weird language arts teacher in the 6th grade and she always pronounced books as "booksh". It wasn't a speech issue, she didn't mispronounce any other words that I remember. It pops in my head more than it should. I have been reading more recently, dipping my toes into fiction. Dave and I started a book club and our first book is The Mountain in the Sea (SciFi). So far it has been really good and I think we will plan to discuss in the next week or 2. I also checked out My Heart is a Chainsaw (Horror) and The Hike (Fantasy) but I am slow and have to return them both before making much progress. I'll revisit them after The Mountain in the Sea.

Bookmarks - Tied in with reading has been my recent interest in bookmarks. In the past, I would just use a slip of paper or some junk mail. We were in Barnes and Noble when I decided I wanted to get one. As a joke, I showed Josie one that says "I like my books spicy and my coffee icy". I laughed and she kind of just gave me a look. I put it back and got one that looked like a stick of butter. But for whatever reason that original bookmark stayed with me. It transitioned from joke to actual desire. A few weeks later I went back to B&N but that bookmark was completely sold out. I returned home disappointed and told Josie. A few moments later she presented an early Christmas present. I can't quite put my finger on why it amuses me so much but it does.

Drawing - A while ago I got an iPad mini with pencil and one of the reasons was for drawing. I did some but again, nothing consistently. My dad got me a drawing book from someone I follow on Instagram. I've never had any skills in drawing but it's fun. If I can keep doing this maybe I will get better. Either way, I was pretty happy with my first landscape.

This Time It Might Stick

No promises. I've been here numerous times. Not just with various blogs, but with random projects in general. And maybe it's that the new year is here, or that Josie just rediscovered her old blogs from her 20s, but I'm feeling foolishly optimistic that this is something that will fill a need I have to document stuff, to be able to look back on years later in horror and cringe.  My life is different in 2025 than it was in 2005, or whenever I started trashcans , and I always struggled to recapture the general vibe and tone that made it funny to me. My life, successes, and struggles, then were probably less deep and nuanced than they are now, and thus made for easy fodder and jokes. But also I'm immediately regretting writing that last sentence because that type of introspection is not at all what I want here. Just trying to set the stage a little for what I might want to include in my posts. It will honestly actually be pretty similar in that I will want to make inconsi...

snow

Beginning midweek last week, everyone was abuzz with upcoming snow. Well, it snowed and continues to snow. By the end of it all I think we should be around 6 inches, which can't compare to some of the huge storms from my childhood, but for Tabitha and Imogen, this is about as big as it gets. Snow days still get me excited but I no longer get to skip school, and my teleworking continues to telework even as offices are closed. There is just residual excitement from school and pre-telework days that remains. Josie got to experience it at her non-telework work Friday afternoon, where the mere threat of a dusting made her work close early, and apparently, her coworkers were singing and dancing. I took Frederick out for her walk this morning and the snow was light and powdery (people love to discuss the consistency of snow), and she seemed to enjoy it. After we got back she whined like only Freddie can, wanting to go back out. It's definitely fun to walk through clean, untouched sno...
